This is a great little unit with impressive sound. Wouldn’t it be great if you could play songs remotely from your Bluetooth-capable phone or MP3 player?

Just add this little Bluetooth receiver Sony Ericsson Hi-Fi Bluetooth Stereo Headset with FM Radio, and you can! The Sony receiver is also rechargeable and can be placed INSIDE your zipped Rockout speaker, leaving you with a fully-portable cordless speaker. Your phone or MP3 player remains safely in your pocket, bag or somewhere *waterproof* while the speaker is out where it can punch out your tunes!

I did just this while biking with my 7YO daughter. She had the speaker attached to her bike, while I streamed songs from my phone. This let her to bike in a safe manner, while I controlled the songs and volume. Of course, we need to stay within Bluetooth range of each other, but that proved to be about 30 feet and wasn’t a problem.

Added bonus: the receiver also has an FM radio, so you can go old school and pull tunes (and yes, commercials) over the air.

Cool, but must modify to work well…, May 4, 2011

    SUMMARY:
Out of the box the sound is terrible. BUT – with a quick modification, problem solved – a great, portable speaker system.

Conceptually, this is a really cool concept… battery free, rechargeable from a portable solar panel, external battery pack, any USB cource, and has a great zippered carry pouch to stow cables, ipod, phone etc…

That said, right out of the box, I thought my unit was a dud. Obviously, this isn’t a Bose sound dock, so I’m not expecting a symphony from this small little box… but I tried it with my ipod and phone, and well, the sound sucked. All mid range and no highs – extremely muddled. Initially I thought maybe there was a high frequency driver that was defective.

So, I compared to some low, low end radio shack portables side by side. Something was wrong. I was annoyed. So, I used a 2″ cold chisel to separate the soft shell/fabric case from the speaker box and remove the guts. Problem solved!!

    THE VERDICT:
The battery/amplifier/speaker box is a self-contained solid recutangular module that slips into the soft fabric/foam sheath. The two small speaker drivers are mounted within a solid particleboard enclosure. Trouble is, the overall case – probably 3/8″ foam plus external fabric covers the speakers. The perforations are useless – like holes in a salt shaker to let the sound through. Bottom line, the sound is like the speakers are wrapped in a blanket because, well, they are. Poor design.

    WHAT TO DO:
Use a large flat screwdriver, putty knife or some such to work around the seam between the unit and the case. Once free, it slips easily in and out – you can then have the speakers playing in the open – sounds WAY better! You can even put them back in the case backwards. This in no way damages the device – easy mod. If you don’t do this, you will be bitterly disappointed.

If modded, I give 2 thumbs up.
