Just some thoughts about my new MBP after about a week of use. No heat issues to report, pretty average from what I’ve seen.

  1. @Joeliustothemaximus Thanks for the tip ;). I actually just found Coda a couple weeks ago as I have to do quite a bit of PHP development for school, as well, and was looking for an all-in-one program. I came across it and haven’t looked back. I’m still on the trial but I’m having a hard time justifying the $99 price tag. We’ll see, I’ll probably end up buying it.

Glad you liked the video 🙂

  2. I was going to suggest that If you’re programming and you don’t want to use spaces to switch between work and browsing desktop. Then try an Application called Coda. Its brilliant and allows a programming side and compiler all in one.
Its not much money and its definitely worth it in my opinion as a heavy javascript programmer. I’m sure you could find the p-list for it somewhere on the internet though…. Nice video! Take it easy dude!

  3. @GamerCrazyHD I can’t really say whether it would be a huge difference between the i5 and i7, your best bet would be to try an Apple forum where people have some test results from both machines. I do know that the difference between the 2.2ghz and 2.3ghz i7 in the 15″ doesn’t make a huge difference, but you’re talking about a 400mhz difference. If I had to bet, you would be better off with the i7. Just my opinion though, I don’t have any facts to back that up. Sorry I couldn’t be more help.

  5. @BAGLERS1 Gosh, some people don’t know what they’re talking about…

I’m pretty sure that the 2011s have double the cores of your 2010. Of course a quad core is going to run hotter than a dual, I don’t understand your point that yours runs cooler. If you look it up, the temps are normal for what pretty much every 2011 is running at under load.

With or without the case and keyboard cover, my temps stay the same under load.

  6. Gosh some people are overprotective…..
And thats where your heat Problem comes from, plastic hard cover on back = no heat exchange over the aluminium bottom of the the macbook.Who cares about scratches on the bottom Plate.Im Running a 2010 15 I5 and the Fans never even get above 2000-2500 when working with Imovie.

  7. @shuttershockvlog You’re not going to get much more performance out of the 17″, but if you’re going to be doing photo/video editing, the extra screen real estate will probably be benificial. The 15″ is plenty for what I use it for (minor gaming, software development, YouTube videos, etc.). You’re pretty much limited to the 2.2ghz 15″ and above; the base model 15’s graphics card is not suitable for gaming.

If you have any other specific questions let me know.

  8. @shuttershockvlog First off, I have to say that I’ve never used video editing software before in my life. iMovie was so incredibly simple to learn and produces some really nice stuff. So I can say that video editing with the built-in software is a breeze. Photo editing, I’m not so sure of.

If you want to run high-end games, your best bet is to install Windows via Boot Camp. You will lose the graphics switching, though, and will decrease battery life.

That said, it’s an awesome machine.

  10. @mkngrm Well, adding knowledge of another OS to your resume certainly doesn’t hurt. Besides, judging from what I see at developer conferences, a lot of top developers are using Mac, so you are definitely in a good company. 🙂 So I’m really glad that you are happy with your purchase and wish you many productive and entertaining hours with it!

  11. @mkngrm Thanks for this insight. That is the kind of thing I was referring to. The UI on the Mac simply looks too good to not suffer from such little usability issues. 🙂 Nevermind, I’m sure one can get used to a different workflow/features that Mac OS X offers.
