Amazing Value!! Great Device, November 1, 2013

Amazing Value! If you already own a balance board from older wii fit games this is a great value! Purchase before Feb and sync with the “demo” version of wii fit u and it unlocks the game for free!!

Value: For $20 you can get the latest and greatest wii fit game if you already own your balance board. Very few games, in the history of console gaming, have offered an “Upgrade” to the newest version for this price. Yes, like wii fit plus, this version of wii fit is technically just the past versions with new upgrades and additions. Still though, most games would make you pay full retail price to even get these upgrades, especially on a new console.

Device Itself: The devices itself is a great device.. I would rate it on par with any high end pedometer. For a pedometer with this many features you would probably pay around the same as the fit meter cost. The meter is very well constructed and comfortable to wear. It has several features from measuring your steps to measuring altitudes. When you sync it with the wii U it uploads your data and helps you see a real picture of how many calories your are burning.. The device seems to take into consideration everything from rest times, to the speed of your steps.. Essentially, as far as I can tell, it knows when you are sitting and slows your calorie burn rate and when you walk it burns faster depending on speed.

It was very very easy to sync with the game (Much easier than controllers) and it is very easy to upload your data. Keep in mind that the game supports as many fit meters as profiles so be sure to pick other meters up for other people in your family if they like pedometers!!

The best part about this device is now I don’t have to manually enter my “walking” workouts into wii fit. I know a lot of wii fit users who do that so this device will save you a lot of time if you are one of those users

Game: I will review the game in more detail when it actually releases in December.. We really shouldn’t waste our fit meter reviews on game reviews but I will go ahead and say the new additions to wii fit u are great! The dance addition is amazing if you have to wii remotes (Needs one for each hand! Has to be wii remote plus or have the adapter). Please don’t expect “Just Dance” here. These are fitness based routines however it has everything from hula music to rap. I think I counted like “8” genres of music. As for the other additions, basically they just added a few new workouts to the same categories we have had in the past.

Graphics: Graphics honestly are the biggest disappointment. They seem to be exactly the same as in the past!! But hey, simple game only needs simple graphics!

More game review will come later!

Overall: I recommend anyone who already owns a balance board to pick up this device.. The device alone is worth the price!! So if you download the demo in the wii u shop, you can say the game is free!!

    Added November 2nd:
So my review is likely going to turn into a review of the game, but I don’t see the harm in that because buying this item is useless unless you buy the game first AND have a balance board. As soon as you turn on the meter, it requires that you sync it with the Wii Game Pad. You cannot use this as a standalone pedometer. The game will also not launch and run without a Balance Board so even though there are games that don’t require the board, the game does so don’t download it and think you can just play the board-less games.

I tried a balance game today and it was one of the most fun things ever. You are walking around a room full of people and have to retrieve desserts from a chef and walk to the person waiting for it. You hold the game pad flat like a tray and have to hold steady or the desserts will fall off and splat. I dropped many of them my first time around and it was hilarious. Another added fun element is that you have to be careful because you will hit people in the side of the head with the dessert tray and if you do they get a furious look on their face like they want to square up with you. It’s really fun.

More to come… original review is below.

If you have a balance board, it’s a no brainer: get this. For $20, you get the meter, which tracks your steps, calories burned, flights of stairs, etc. Once you download the free trial of the new Wii Fit U software, you sync up the meter and once you do that, the game is free. Compare that with the on disk version coming out in December that you have to pay for in addition to the $20 bucks for the meter.

I downloaded the software today when I got home from work. It took under an hour to download and install. Once that was done, I was able to transfer my information/profile from the previous Wii Fit games. Syncing the meter with the game was a breeze: you point the meter at the game pad and hold the button down. Anyone that’s used a balance board with Wii Fit before remembers the little voice saying “Measuring…… Measuring….. Measuring.” Well, the voice is back and while syncing the meter you are serenaded with “Transmitting…. Transmitting…. Transmitting.” Once your step count and other info is transferred, you will see a graph of activity in the game.

If you choose to play the game and do workouts and exercises, you do not wear the meter. The game tracks your progress/workouts during play. You only wear the meter when you are away from the game and then sync it in later.

There are a bunch of new activities in the game this time around. I didn’t have a lot of time so I tried out the Rowing, Rhythm Boxing and Squash Blocks. The Rhythm Boxing game was not registering my punches properly but maybe it was me. I did learn that if anyone ever needs a rower, do not call me. I was completely off timing wise. When the paddles went one way for the other rowers, mine went the opposite way and try as I might, I could not get the hang of it. I will work on that but for now, the people in that boat probably never want to see me coming again and I don’t blame them!

The Squash Blocks was really fun. You stand on the balance board and step and lean to move your character, swing the racket and the blocks on the wall that you hit will break. There are a bunch more that I am planning on trying tomorrow. There is one with a trampoline that I can’t wait to try.

There is a gym community feature in the game that I’m not fully sure how it works. I believe you can start a community and put your community number online and others can join you to compare stats. I saw a person or two on the Wii Fit Community boards had their group number listed but I really didn’t have a whole lot of time to poke around too much or get too involved in the game. I will edit this review as I go along.

There is a dance element added now with many types of dance: jazzy, flamenco, hip hop and a few others. I have zero interest in dance moves so that’s one area that I will never try.

The bottom line is this is a really great workout system to have and if you already have a board you cannot go wrong for 20 bucks. I believe this offer has an expiration date.

For owners of the Wii U and a Balance Board, a great alternative to FitBit or FuelBand, November 2, 2013

As most people know by now, Nintendo has a special deal for anyone who’s a Wii U owner and already owns a Wii Balance Board. If you download the free 31-day trial version of Wii Fit U from the Nintendo eShop, all you have to do is purchase this $19.99 Fit Meter and register it in-game to convert the trial version into the full version. Considering that the retail bundle of the physical game + Fit Meter will cost $49.99–and won’t even be released until 1/10/14–you can save $30 and get the full game right away. (The deal is only good until 1/31/14).

The unit itself is about the size of an Oreo cookie. The unit is fairly light, and its edges are smooth and rounded. While marketing images of the Fit Meter showed it in a lovely green color, Fit Meters currently come just in black/grey in North America.

The Wii U logo is on top, and on the bottom there are three buttons: a left and right arrow and a round button in the middle. The unit has a 1″ x 3/4″ LCD screen. As light as it is, the unit seems fairly durable; I’ve dropped mine a few times already and it’s none the worse for wear. That said, I’d still handle it with care; the unit is covered by Nintendo’s 12-month warranty, but that likely won’t cover dings and scratches.

There’s no backlight but the LCD display is pretty readable. Happily, the battery appears to be easily replaceable. You unscrew a single Phillips screw on the back of the unit, which reveals a CR 2032 watch battery. Because of some smart battery-saving techniques, the one battery should last you many months, if not longer (the LCD screen display only turns on when you press the button, but after a few minutes the screen will go into “sleep” mode, shutting off the display but still tracking your motions throughout the day).

When you power up the unit (by removing the plastic tab covering the battery), you’ll see an icon of the Fit Meter next to an icon of the Wii U GamePad on the LCD screen. I took this as my cue to start up Wii Fit U to register it. When you do so, make sure that you’re signed in to the profile that you want associated with the Fit Meter. While multiple users in Wii Fit U can use a Fit Meter, each person would need to have his or her own.

To get started with the registration process, you can simply click on the bouncing Fit Meter in the game. Then, click on the “Register” button. You’ll be told to point the Fit Meter to your Wii U Gamepad. It took me a few tries before I realized I had to point the *top* of my Fit Meter to the *top* of the GamePad.

You then press and hold the middle button on the Fit Meter, and then you’ll see a “Transmitting Data” screen. Lo and behold, in a few seconds, you’ll see your Mii’s face magically appear on the LCD screen. In a way that reminded me of a Tamagotchi, your Mii’s facial expressions will change from time to time, giving your device a bit of a personality.

You basically clip it on your waist, and your movements will be tracked throughout the day. The Fit Meter is a pedometer that track steps, of course, but it does a whole lot more. It also tracks your altitude, displays the current time, displays the current temperature, and shows how many calories you’ve burned. I was pleasantly surprised that unlike other pedometers, this one seemed to be pretty accurate at tracking actual steps and of negating false positives (other pedometers I’ve had would give me 10 steps just for sneezing or dropping it). Walking is based on both number of steps and stride, so brisk walking or running is differentiated from casual movement. Similarly, it’s smart enough to differentiate altitude changes when you walk vs. when you go on an elevator and “credit” you the right numbers.

There are actually a lot of neat little features on the unit itself. Pressing and quickly releasing the middle button let me scroll through various tiny graphs on the unit, including a METs graph (Metabolic Equivalents, basically a measure of exertion), an altitude chart, a chart of calories burned by week, and settings for volume (of the various chirps the unit makes) and for contrast of the LCD display.

Moving forward, whenever you start up Wii Fit U and select your profile, the system will ask you first to point your Fit Meter to the GamePad and sync the data.

After you register your device some things in Wii Fit U will change as well. First, you’ll notice that your Mii is now wearing the Fit Meter on his or her waist. There’ll also be two new menu options:

The first is called “Fit Meter Data”, where you’ll be able to view data transferred from your Fit Meter, with detailed information for each day. You can see the number of METs expended each day, by the hour of the day, whether you’re running, ascending, descending, walking, doing light activity, or resting. Over time, it’s fascinating to look for patterns in your daily activities.

    The second is…
