Xiaomi to announce its in-house Pinecone SoC on February 2…

Over the past few months, Xiaomi has been rumored to be working on a custom mobile SoC numerous times. The rumored chipset is all set to finally go official next week at an event in China. As suggested by rumors last year, the in-house SoC is indeed named “Pinecone”. The Pinecone announcement will be made at the China National Convention Center in Beijing on February 28th.

Most smartphone makers prefer relying on chipset manufacturers such as Qualcomm and MediaTek, instead of developing their own chips. Xiaomi however, has decided that it wants to join the small club of smartphone makers that develop their own mobile SoCs. After the Pinecone announcement next week, it will become the second Chinese smartphone maker after SoC to design a mobile SoC.

According to rumors, Xiaomi is working on two Pinecone SoCs currently – V670 and V970. The V670 is said to feature a total of eight ARM Cortex-A53 cores in a dual-cluster configuration, with the Mali-T860 MP4 GPU. The V970 on the other hand will be a more powerful SoC with four ARM Cortex-A73 cores and four ARM Cortex-A53 cores.

The first smartphone to be powered by a Xiaomi Pinecone SoC is expected to be the Mi 5c, which has been in the rumor mills for a few months now.
