Xiaomi has been working on two flagship smartphones, the Mi Note 2 and the Mi 5s, for the second half of this year. A number of leaks have given us plenty of details on what we can expect from either device, but the time frame of their launch has been a mystery. That’s changing today for at least the Mi 5s, which is all set to be unveiled on September 27th according to a teaser image posted by Xiaomi. The teaser has a giant “S” along with the date underneath, which is a good indication that it is the Mi 5s that will make an official appearance on the day.
It was only last week that we saw a purported Xiaomi Mi 5s in the flesh, complete with a circular new home button that might hide Qualcomm’s ultrasonic fingerprint sensor underneath. The Mi 5s is set to be a notable upgrade over the Mi 5 – the Mi 5s has a Qualcomm Snapdragon 821 SoC under the hood, along with 6GB of RAM and 256 GB of internal storage. Needless to say, Xiaomi is probably going to offer a variant with lesser RAM and storage. There is said to be a 16-megapixel camera on the back with optical image stabilization, an 8-megapixel camera on the front for selfies, and a 3,490 mAh battery with Quick Charge 3.0 support. The Mi 5s should run MIUI 8 based on Android 6.0 Marshmallow out of the box.
The Xiaomi Mi 5s won’t find it very easy to court consumers once it launches next week, thanks to the fact that LeEco is all set to unveil the Pro 3 with 8GB of RAM on September 21. Of course, it’s not like consumers will be complaining for lack of choice given both the Mi 5s and LeEco Pro 3 are set to be priced aggressively like all other handsets from the two Chinese manufacturers. There’s not actual word on how much the Mi 5s will cost, but we can expect a price tag south of the $450 mark. All shall be revealed on September 27th.
