GPS navigation device vendor Mitac International has launched MiVia Essential 350, a smart wrist band, in the Taiwan market for sale at NT$3,990 (US$125).

Mitac said the 25-gram, IPX7 water-proof device measures heart rates and calories burned, and features a pedometer, a 0.48-inch screen.

While MiVia Essential 350 is basically a consumer electronic device, Mitac will launch MiVia smart wrist band models specifically for health care, and has applied for Taiwan Food and Drug Administration certification for the Taiwan market.

For the Europe market, Mitac Isaid it has obtained CE Marking certification and will cooperate with local hospitals and clinics to promote the devices.

Mitac will also launch Mio-branded GPS-enabled smartwatches that measure heart rates for sports activities. There is global demand for 4-5 million sports-use smartwatches a year and Garmin has occupied 70-80% of the market.
