Strong demand for gaming products boosts related ASP
Monica Chen, Taipei; Joseph Tsai, DIGITIMES [Friday 30 September 2016]

Despite seeing dropping shipments, CPU, motherboard and graphics card ASPs still continued to enjoy growths recently thanks to increasing demand for gaming products. Players including Gigabyte Technology, Asustek Computer and Micro-Star International (MSI) have all benefited from the trend.

Although motherboard players are seeing declining shipments overall in 2016, demand for mid-range to high-end motherboards continues expanding. Many motherboard players have aggressively releasing gaming motherboards recently hoping to snatch shares from the largest vendor Asustek, and Gigabyte Technology so far has performed the best in raising its mid-range to high-end motherboard shipment proportion.

Gigabyte is expected to ship 17.2-17.5 million motherboards in 2016 and 9.0-9.2 million of them will go to China, while Asustek is expected to ship 17.5 million motherboards globally in 2016, including 9.3-9.5 million units in the China market.

Although Gigabyte’s shipments will be less than those in 2015, the company’s revenues from the business will still enjoy growth, while profits will remain at the same level as a year ago thanks to rising ASP.

Micro-Star International (MSI), which has been focusing mainly on the gaming notebook business in the past few years, has also seen rising shipments in mid-range to high-end motherboards recently. MSI’s motherboard business already turned profitable in the third quarter and the company is aggressively chasing the top-2 players currently.
