Snapdragon 835-powered Motorola handset visits Geekbench

232

A Motorola Android smartphone powered by the octa-core Qualcomm Snapdragon 835 chipset has appeared on the Geekbench benchmark database. What is strange however, is that the device carries the model number XT1650, which actually belongs to the Moto Z. While it is possible that the device caught on Geekbench could be a Moto Z (2017) prototype, it will definitely not be carrying the same model number as the Moto Z.

The Geekbench listing reveals the smartphone runs on the msm8998 Qualcomm Snapdragon 835 chipset with the Adreno 540 GPU, paired with 4GB of RAM. While the choice of SoC is no doubt impressive, we’re not sure if it is a good idea to equip your 2017 flagship smartphone with “just” 4GB of RAM. Asus has already announced a smartphone with 8GB of LPDDR4 RAM and we expect more manufacturers to announce flagship handsets with 8GB of RAM in the coming months. In terms of software, the prototype was caught running on Android 7.1.1 Nougat, which is currently the latest available version of Nougat from Google.

Apart from this benchmark leak, we haven’t heard anything yet regarding the Moto Z (2017). Motorola’s Moto X as well as Moto G lineup for 2017 has been leaked online recently, but no Moto Z (2017) leaks have surfaced online so far. More than the actual specifications, we’re curious to find out if Motorola will continue with the modular design concept that it introduced last year with the Moto Z and Moto Z Force smartphones, or if it will ditch the concept altogether.
