Nantucket, Massachusetts is going to receive its backup power from a large installation of Tesla Powerpacks, which will store enough energy to support the region’s 11,000 permanent residents and 40,000 seasonal visitors. Nantucket is making the transition now that it’s time to replace the two six-megawatt diesel generators currently in place for backup power.
National Grid began exploring battery solutions that could be added to the island as part of the new setup. It settled on over 200 Powerpacks that’ll be supplied by a single generator.
This new setup will be useful during power outages and it can also stabilize the grid when there’s high demand.
