Part of Britain’s National Health Service (NHS) has received financial support from DeepMind, a artificial intelligence division within Google. DeepMind has given Moorfields Eye Hospital NHS Foundation Trust £110,000 since setting up a deal with the organization two months ago.
Together, the hospital and DeepMind are working to see if AI can help find early signs of eye conditions that’d otherwise be missed by human examiners.
A Freedom of Information request from Business Insider revealed DeepMind’s financial support for the research. Though the AI company is working with four additional NHS trusts, this is the first instance where we know it has paid a trust. The money is said to cover the costs incurred by Moorfields for preparing the data for DeepMind to use.
Moorfields is using DeepMind’s algorithms on 1 million anonymous OCT scans to see if they’ll find early macular degeneration and sight loss signs.
