BlackBerry to unveil the ‘Mercury’ on February 25th

BlackBerry has released a new teaser that confirms its ‘Mercury’ smartphone will be announced on the 25th of this month. The event will be held in Barcelona at 7pm local time, two days before the Mobile World Congress 2017 kicks off.

Even though the ‘Mercury’ was shown off at the Consumer Electronics Show (CES) 2017 in Las Vegas last month, the handset’s specifications have still not been revealed. What we do know is that it is the last smartphone developed completely in-house by BlackBerry. The DTEK50 and DTEK60 smartphones, which were launched last year, are ODM devices developed and manufactured by TCL.

According to rumors, the Mercury is going to feature a 4.5-inch sized display with a 4:3 aspect ratio. Below the display will be a physical QWERTY keyboard, something we haven’t seen on an Android smartphone in a long time. Under the hood, the smartphone is rumored to run on the octa-core Qualcomm Snapdragon 625 chipset, paired with 3GB of RAM. At the back will be a 12MP primary camera, using the very same custom Sony IMX378 camera sensor used on the Google Pixel smartphones. For selfies, the smartphone will offer an 8MP camera on the front. Rest of the rumored specs include a USB Type-C port and a fingerprint scanner embedded inside the space bar on the front. The smartphone will be running on Android 7.0 Nougat OS out of the box, along with the entire suite of BlackBerry services.
