BlackBerry today formally unveiled its latest flagship smartphone, the DTEK60. Unlike the Priv, the DTEK60 isn’t designed and developed by BlackBerry itself. Instead, the smartphone has been manufactured for BlackBerry by Chinese manufacturer TCL, which owns Alcatel. The DTEK60 is actually based on the high end Alcatel Idol 4S and the TCL 950.
The handset packs a 5.5-inch 1440 x 2560 Quad HD resolution display and is powered by the mighty Qualcomm Snapdragon 820 SoC. It features a solid metal frame in the middle and glass finish on the back as well as the front.
In terms of memory, the DTEK60 comes with 4GB of RAM and 32GB of internal memory, which can be further expanded thanks to a microSD card slot. When it comes to imaging, the DTEK60 offers a 21MP unit at the back and an 8MP snapper on the front for selfies and video calls. Keeping the lights on is a 3000mAh capacity battery, which does support Qualcomm Quick Charge 3.0.
In the connectivity department, the DTEK60 offers all the modern connectivity features such as Bluetooth 4.2 Low Energy, Wi-Fi 802.11ac dual-band, LTE-Advanced, GPS with GLONASS, and a USB Type-C port with support for USB OTG. The smartphone includes a fingerprint scanner as well, positioned at the back. It is launching with Android 6.0 Marshmallow OS out of the box, but an update to Android 7.0 Nougat is said to be in the works.
Starting today, the BlackBerry DTEK60 will be available SIM-free for $499 in the US.
