Alexandria Chou, Taipei; Steve Shen, DIGITIMES [Thursday 13 October 2016]

Apple plans to set up a research and development center in Shenzhen, China, according to a China-based Shenzhen Economic Daily report, citing comments from Tim Cook. Apple opened an R&D center in Beijing in August.

Cook announced the plan during a meeting with senior China officials in the southern China city where he was attending a public innovation event, said the report.

Cook also met with Terry Gou, chairman of Foxconn Electronics, Apple’s primary hardware manufacturing partner in China.

Apple will continue to encourage the development of software products in Shenzhen and attract more talent, said Cook, adding that Apple also plans to open a number of retail shops in the city to serve its customers in China, according to the paper.
