Alleged Xiaomi Mi 5s live image crops up

A few months back, rumors out of China claimed that Xiaomi was working on a more powerful variant of the Mi 5, dubbed the Mi 5s. However, evidence of the device’s existence started cropping up online only recently, with it making an appearance on the popular AnTuTu benchmark database and receiving certification from China’s 3C regulatory agency. Today, the first alleged live image of the smartphone has leaked online, courtesy of Weibo user @Kjuma.

Since the Mi 5s is expected to be based on the current Mi 5, we do find it a little strange that the Mi 5s appears to have a very different home button on the front. The leaked Mi 5s image shows a tiny circular home button, while the current Mi 5 has an oblong home button. One explanation could be that the home button has been changed to accommodate the next-gen Qualcomm Ultrasonic fingerprint sensor. Xiaomi’s other upcoming flagship smartphone, the Mi Note 2 is also rumored to feature an ultrasonic fingerprint sensor.

The Mi 5s is expected to arrive with the same 5.1-inch sized 1080p display as the Mi 5, but with added 3D Touch technology. It will be powered by the Qualcomm Snapdragon 821 quad-core 64-bit SoC inside, which could be clocked as high as 2.4 GHz. Complementing the powerful flagship SoC will be 6GB of LPDDR4 RAM. However, just like the Mi 5, we do expect Xiaomi to offer the Mi 5s in multiple memory configurations. In terms of storage, the top end variant is said to offer 256GB of built-in memory. At the back, Xiaomi’s upcoming Mi 5s could be equipped with a 16MP primary snapper offering phase detection autofocus tech, 4-axis optical image stabilization (OIS) and a bright f/1.8 aperture lens. For selfies, the Mi 5s will offer an 8MP snapper on the front, an upgrade over the 4MP selfie camera on the current Mi 5 in terms of resolution. It is rumored to offer better battery life as well, thanks to a larger 3490mAh capacity battery supporting Qualcomm’s Quick Charge 3.0 standard. In terms of software, the Mi 5s will most likely launch with MIUI 8 out of the box, based on Android 6.0.1 Marshmallow.
