Yahoo's Billion Account Database Has Repeatedly So…

249

A database containing details for a billion Yahoo accounts reportedly sold on the dark net for $300,000. It went up for purchase in August 2015, says Andrew Komarov of the security firm InfoArmor. He says the hacker group selling the database appears to be based in Eastern Europe.

Three separate buyers have so far been recorded, with each spending $300,000. Two are spammers and one is believed to potentially be involved in “espionage.”

Yahoo revealed the 2013 breach earlier this week, putting its acquisition by Verizon in jeopardy. An investigation is taking place and Yahoo doesn’t know who was responsible.

Included in the database are full names, birth dates, phone numbers, security questions, backup email addresses, and inadequately protected passwords.

Komarov says 150,000 accounts were tied to US government and military employees.
