Xiaomi unveils the Mi MIX phablet with a 6.4-inch edgeless…

In addition to the Mi Note 2, Xiaomi also announced a new flagship phablet that almost seems unreal. The Mi MIX may look like a wild concept phone, but Xiaomi will actually be selling the device to consumers soon. The phablet features a huge 6.4” display with 2040 x 1080 resolution in a 17:9 aspect ratio and virtually non-existent borders on the top as well as the sides. This results in an incredibly high screen-to-body ratio of 91.3%. Since there is almost no space on the front, the fingerprint scanner has been positioned at the back.

Like the Mi Note 2, the Mi MIX too happens to be powered by Qualcomm’s new Snapdragon 821 flagship mobile SoC with the Adreno 530 GPU. In terms of memory, the Mi MIX comes with either 4 or 6GB of RAM and up to 256 GB UFS 2.0 internal storage. At the back, the phablet is equipped with a 16MP primary camera with phase detection autofocus and an f/2.0 aperture lens. For taking selfies, the phablet includes a 5MP front-facing camera.

On the connectivity front, the Mi MIX offers Wi-Fi 802.11ac dual-band, Bluetooth 4.2 Low Energy, GPS high-precision positioning, NFC, 4G VoLTE, and a USB Type-C port. The battery inside is a 4400mAh unit, which is slightly larger than what you get with the Mi Note 2. Despite that, the phablet is quite thin, with dimensions of 158.8 x 81.9 x 7.9mm. However, it is quite heavy, weighing in at 209 grams. While the hardware on offer is right up there with the best, the Mi MIX is slightly disappointing in the software department. Instead of the latest Android Nougat, the phablet runs on MIUI 8, based on Android 6.0 Marshmallow.

The Mi MIX base variant with 4GB of RAM and 128GB storage has been priced at 3499 Yuan ($516). The top end special edition with 18k karat gold rims around camera and fingerprint sensor, featuring 6GB of RAM and 256GB of UFS 2.0 internal memory will be available at 3999 Yuan ($590). The phablet is now up for pre-orders in China and will be going on sale in the country starting November 4th.
