Tomorrow, the newly announced Xiaomi Mi Smart RearView Mirror will go on sale at a price tag of 999 yuan ($158). So we decided to take our hands on this really intelligent car product and review it. We have already managed to review the first-gen model. And it will be very interesting to learn the enhancements and changes coming our way from this mirror.
As the packaging shows, this rearview mirror is made by the Xiaomi ecological chain company named the Shanghai New Digital Technology Cl., Ltd. The first model known as the Xiaomi 70 Steps Smart Rearview Mirror was made by this company as well. So there should be too many similarities.
The position of the interfaces and the keys are marked on the protective film.
The bottom side carries the SIM card and SD card slots. It supports 4G connectivity as well as a dual-band WiFi.
In addition to the power connector on the top, there is an interface reserved for the rear camera. After installing, it supports dual recording and reverses images.
The Xiaomi Mi Smart RearView Mirror adopts the Sony IMX291 image sensor with a resolution of 1920 x 1080 pixels, an aperture of f/1.8, a 150 degrees large viewing angle, and many more.
As the sticker suggests, this rearview mirror comes with STARVIS (straight night vision). Thus, the IMX291 sensor belongs to the aforementioned series that is capable of providing good imaging results at low light conditions.
There is a cooling grill on the back. But the Xiaomi Mi Smart RearView Mirror uses a patented heat dissipation system. The mirror removes the hot air from the copper and thermal silica quickly using graphene to increase the heat dissipation area. It is also combined with aviation aluminum. The unique heat radiating fins improve the efficiency of heat dissipation and allow the machine to maintain long-term stability.
On the left and right sides, there are two rubber bands to fix the mirror on the car’s original mirror.
The box also includes a 2-in-1 power cord and a track crowbar.
Once the rearview mirror is turned on, we can see the large 6.86-inch IPS screen with a resolution of 1280×480 pixels. Before use, you have to load a SIM card or connect to the WiFi network. Thereafter, you need to download the Mi Family Driving Assistant on your phone to bind.
So how to use it? Say, you can send the navigation destination to the rearview mirror through the phone.
On the front, we can see the light sensor, which automatically adjusts the brightness of the screen according to the ambient light level of the car.
It also has a daytime mode, the average brightness of which is way higher than the one for the night mode.
This mirror has a huge amount of media resources including radio stations and music.
One of the most important features of this mirror is the integrated ADAS system supporting FCW (Forward Collision Warning), PVS (Preceding Vehicle Starting), and LDW (Lane Departure Warning).
The Xiaomi Mi Smart RearView Mirror comes with tons of useful features. Plus, it supports voice commands. So you can control it without hands. Say, you can give commands to take photos or record videos, play music, switch radio channels, make emergency calls, etc. In order to make speech recognition more accurate, this product comes with an echo cancellation, master drive source recognition, and double wheat noise reduction technologies.
However, the most interesting part of this mirror is the ability to connect with Xiaomi Smart Home products. Once it syncs for the first time, you can use it to control your home appliances remotely during driving.
