Following a string of rumors and leaks, Xiaomi has finally made official its newest flagships, the Mi 5S and Mi 5S Plus. Featuring 5.15-inch and 5.7-inch displays, the Mi 5S and Mi 5S Plus are set to go on sale in the Chinese market on September 29. With the Mi 5S Plus, Xiaomi is joining other manufacturers in offering a dual primary camera setup and 6GB of RAM; the two handsets are also the first to feature Qualcomm’s ultrasonic fingerprint sensor, which allows for fingerprint recognition even with wet or dirty fingers.
The Xiaomi Mi 5S will be the main flagship replacing the Mi 5 and offers mostly the same set of specs save for a few upgrades. It has a Full HD LCD display, Snapdragon 821 quad-core CPU clocked at 2.15 GHz, 3GB/4GB of RAM, 64GB/128GB of internal storage, a 12-megapixel rear camera, a 4-megapixel front-facing camera, a 3,200 mAh battery with Qualcomm Quick Charge 3.0 support, 4G LTE connectivity, dual SIM slots, USB Type-C port, and Android 6.0 Marshmallow with Xiaomi’s MIUI 8 user interface.
The Mi 5S Plus, in addition to a larger screen and faster processor (clocked at 2.3GHz instead of 2.15GHz), also comes with dual 13-megapixel cameras at the back. Most of the other specs are shared with the Mi 5S – the changes include a 3,800 mAh battery, 6GB of RAM on the top variant, and 4GB of RAM on the regular variant (with 128GB and 64GB storage respectively). The 5.7-inch display retains the Full HD resolution, which means performance on the device should be theoretically better than competing flagships with Quad HD displays.
The Xiaomi Mi 5S and Mi 5S Plus will be offered in grey, silver, gold and rose gold color options. Pricing starts at 1,999 yuan (SGD 407) for the 3GB Mi 5S and 2,299 yuan (SGD 468) for the 4GB RAM variant of the Mi 5S. The Mi 5S Plus will cost 2,299 yuan (SGD 468) for the 4GB variant and 2,599 yuan (SGD 530) for the model with 6GB of RAM. Xiaomi hasn’t announced availability details for markets outside China yet, but we should be getting more information in the coming weeks.
