Xiaomi announces the Redmi 4 & Redmi 4A in China

Xiaomi today announced the successor to Redmi 3 at an event in China, dubbed the Redmi 4. Along with the Redmi 4, the Chinese manufacturer also unveiled the Redmi 4A, which happens to be one of the cheapest Android smartphones that Xiaomi has launched yet.

The Redmi 4 features a 5-inch IPS display with 1080 x 1920 Full HD resolution and 2.5D curved glass on top. There are two variants on offer, each powered by a different chipset. The base variant, priced at RMB 699 (S$143), runs on the Snapdragon 430 octa-core SoC, paired with 2GB of RAM and 16GB of built-in storage. Priced at RMB 899 (S$184), the more expensive variant is powered by the Qualcomm Snapdragon 625 octa-core chipset, paired with 3GB of RAM and 32GB of built-in storage. Both variants feature a 13MP rear camera with phase detection autofocus, 5MP selfie camera, microSD expansion, 4100mAh battery, fingerprint scanner, 4G VoLTE, dual-SIM card slots, and all the latest connectivity features that you expect from a 2016 entry-level smartphone. The Redmi 4 runs on MIUI 8 out of the box, based on Android 6.0.1 Marshmallow.

The Xiaomi Redmi 4A on the other hand packs a 5-inch display with 720p HD resolution, Qualcomm Snapdragon 425 SoC, 2GB of RAM, 16GB of built-in expandable storage, 13MP rear camera, 5MP selfie camera, 4G VoLTE network support, hybrid Dual SIM card slots, and a 3120mAh capacity battery. Similar to the Redmi 4, the Redmi 4A too runs on MIUI 8, based on Android 6.0.1 Marshmallow. The smartphone has been priced at RMB 499 in China, which converts to S$102.
