XBOX ONE S To Surge Ahead With Incoming Dolby Atmos Suppor…

If unleashing a game console installed with a 4K Bluray Player isn’t enough to convert gamers from the Sony PS4, this latest update from Microsoft might do the trick.

In 2017, Microsoft will be releasing an OTA update that will unlock Dolby Atmos support on Xbox One S consoles. For those who haven’t heard of Dolby Atmos, it is a popular audio format from 4K Bluray Content that drastically adds pinpoint positioning of sounds all around you, and even above you.  Originally intended for Cinemas, Gamers will now be introduced to a much higher level of immersion in FPS and RPG games – and gain a fresh tactical advantage over their opponents!

Though this may mean getting a new home audio system or soundbar that supports it.

So if you’re in the market for a new media box, this makes the Xbos One S a much more attractive option! Owners of Atmos-compatible home theatre can not only playback 4K Bluray movies with picture that will beat anything you stream from Netflix (4K UHD picture in 60fps!) – you get much better sound too!

Microsoft has said that this upgrade will also work with headphones, but I’m quite skeptical about how that much audio signal (11 discrete channels!) can pass through a regular headphones stereo cable.

A word from Mike Ybarra, Xbox’s Head of Platform Engineering:

“At Team Xbox, we are all gamers first, and bringing Dolby Atmos support to Xbox One and Windows 10 gaming next year will bring you even further inside the action and sound of your favorite titles. A big thank you to the team at Dolby for their partnership; we’re excited to share more with the Xbox community next year.”

Will this leave PS4 Pro owners kicking themselves? PS4 or PS4 Pro owners please tell us!
