The Windows Store is not one of the strengths of Windows 10, but according to one developer more users should give it a try, as they may find themselves unexpectedly satisfied.
Ben Fox from User Camp has been making money from the Windows Store for some time, with more than 2 million unique users of his apps. Despite his positive experience all he hears from other commentators has been negative impressions of the store.
He therefore decided to hear directly from the actual users of the store, and using in-app ads he managed to survey more than 500 users of his apps to find out what they actually thought of the store.
He reports that the Windows Store has a positive Net Promoter Score of 0.05 ie “the Store has — very slightly — more promoters (9s and 10s) than detractors (6 or less).”
From their free-form replies he noted the Windows Store was winning users over with good usability, but needs to offer more and higher-quality apps. Free apps that are “too greedy” with their monetization were specifically called out in most of the negative remarks about pricing. And despite the compliments to usability, errors with the Store and Windows 10 and discoverability problems were common complaints.
Fox believed that the Store was poised for growth, but noted that developers needed to be more savvy about promoting their apps, resist the urge to plaster them with ads, and invest more in the quality of their apps.
