Microsoft’s new Windows Phone "Mango" update offers more than 500 tweaks and improvements to the platform. Some of those new features, such as multitasking and a revamped Office hub, are major. Others are under-the-hood adjustments meant to improve performance or fix niggling bugs. Smartphones loaded with Mango also have the option to operate as WiFi hotspots for nearby devices, provided that feature is enabled by a carrier. Over the next few months, smartphones preloaded with Mango will roll out on a handful of new hardware partners, including Nokia. Microsoft likely hopes that concerted push will boost the fortunes of its smartphone platform, which has faced some hard competition in the first year of existence from the likes of Apple’s iPhone and Google Android. "We haven’t sold quite as many probably as I would have hoped we would have sold in the first year," Microsoft CEO Steve Ballmer recently told the audience during the company’s Financial Analyst Meeting. "I think with a little bit more effort, a little bit more energy, the level of enthusiasm from the customer base is high enough we’ve just got to kick this thing to the next level." The following are some of Windows Phone Mango’s top-level improvements. The update is expected to roll onto existing Windows Phones over the next few weeks. – …
