Rental car company Avis is going to work on Waymo’s autonomous vehicles in Arizona, Waymo has announced. It’s partnered with Avis in the state so that it has a place to store the vehicles and a team to service them. Waymo is using modified Chrysler Pacifica minivans to develop its autonomous vehicle technology.
Under this deal, the Alphabet division maintains ownership of the vehicles and it’ll pay Avis for service.
Since Waymo isn’t an actual car company, it’s not entering the industry with the same expertise and resources, so working with an entity more familiar with vehicles has its benefits.
