In its first-quarter results, Verizon Wireless is boasting a low subscriber churn rate of just 1.01 percent and net growth of 1.8 million accounts. Verizon also said it activated 2.2 million CDMA iPhones during the quarter, but did not separate them into new customers and existing customers switching to Apple’s smartphone.
Verizon Wireless, a partnership between Verizon Communications and Vodafone, now claims 104 million accounts, including 88.4 million retail users, boosting its status as the largest U.S. wireless carrier, although that could change if federal regulators approve AT&T’s acquisition of T-Mobile to create a company serving about 130 million accounts.
More LTE Markets
Verizon followed its earnings announcement Thursday with news that it will extend its high-speed, long term evolution (LTE) network to seven more markets: Clarksville, Tenn.; Hopkinsville, Ky.; Cleveland, Tenn.; Columbia and Hilton Head, S.C.; Wilmington, N.C.; and the Greater Lehigh Valley in Pennsylvania. Verizon will also expand the LTE coverage area in Charlotte, S.C.
“As of today, we will offer consumers and businesses in 45 metropolitan areas the most advanced 4G wireless network on the planet, while continuing to offer the nation’s most reliable 3G network coast to coast,” said Verizon Wireless CTO David Small. “We plan to aggressively light up 4G in new cities and bring our blazingly fast 4G LTE network to more than 100 additional cities in the next nine months.”
The LTE network, however, is still mostly for laptop data since Verizon’s 4G smartphone offerings are limited. On Thursday the company announced that its second LTE phone, the Samsung Droid Charge, will be available on April 28. The handset was unveiled when Verizon announced its 4G devices at January’s Consumer Electronics Show, but was then simply called the Samsung 4G LTE.
