The US will soon announce an expansion of laptop-related restrictions to European nations, according to US and European officials. Laptop restrictions were first implemented against flights originating from 10 Middle East airports in March.
Those restrictions are arising out of concerns that someone could place a bomb within an electronic device. They also cover other devices (i.e. tablets) that are larger than handsets.
Dave Lapan, a spokesperson for the Department of Homeland Security, says secretary John Kelly “hasn’t made a decision but we continue to evaluate the threat environment and have engaged in discussions with airline representatives and other stakeholders about the threat.”
One of the problems being evaluated by the administration is the safety of lithium-ion batteries. They’re trying to figure out how laptop’s with lithium batteries can be safely stored in airplane holds.
