Petya, a new piece of ransomware that’s been spreading through Russia and Ukraine, is now present in the United States. It’s also spread to parts of Europe, Asia, and Australia. The malware has affected banking systems in some countries and disabled the automatic radiation monitoring system at Chernobyl.
The malware, which could be part of a coordinated cyberattack, has so far infected a port in Los Angeles as well as some hospitals. The same goes for Merck and FedEx.
Little is known about the source of the attack or the ransomware itself. It seems to be exploiting the same kind of Windows flaw that was utilized by WannaCry in May.
