Prisma is easily one of the best apps of 2016. An app that turns your regular photos into pieces of art using filters, Prisma picks up the ball where Instagram dropped it and throws it right out of the park!
If you haven’t already used Prisma, a few minutes playing with this intuitively-designed app is going to make you a fan. It’s as simple as 1-2-3! Open Prisma, click a photo and apply a filter. That’s it – now you can share it to any of your social network feeds with a tap!
Created by a small Moscow-based team of developers led by CEO Alexey Moiseenkov, Prisma uses neural network processing/deep learning AI algorithms to transform your photos into artworks in different styles. In their own words,
“We’re not just overlaying like an Instagram filter. We create the photo from scratch. So there is no photo, we take your photo, then perform some operations and give a new photo to you. So deep learning is like an artist, something like that.”
Launched exclusively for iOS in June 2016, overwhelming response from users all across the globe inspired the team to launch an Android version in July. Since then, they’ve pushed out multiple updates for the app– adding new styles every few weeks and offline-processing capabilities. Being a small team, they’ve always pushed out updates to their iOS app and then followed it up by adding the same features to the Android app a few weeks later.
But the latest update (to the iOS app for now but coming to Android very soon) is something we are truly excited about. It adds a new location-based feed that lets you share your artworks with people around you while also browsing artworks from people in your geography. In a way, it is an Instagram for Prisma. What’s more, you can now use a free aspect ratio when capturing and selecting photos, no more squares! So, you can use all those landscapes and portraits (and selfies!), turn them into a piece of art and share them in the same resolution!
Have you tried Prisma yet? If not, go give it a try. It’s fun! If you’re already using this wonderful app, how about sharing some of your best work? Here’s a few that were created by yours truly…
