UMIDIGI One Max phablet: full screen with 91.5% screen to body ratio
The UMIDIGI One Max looks like one of the many flagships we’ve had the pleasure of reviewing this year. What makes it different is the notably low price of just $179.99. The UMIDIGI One Max large screen (6.3 inch) phone with a teardrop notch housing the front camera. There are minimal side frames and a small chin but the screen occupies an impressive 91.5% of the front panel’s real estate and comes with the 19:9 aspect ratio. The display comes with 1520 x 720 pixels resolution and features 287 pixels per inch density.
The phone is available in two of this year’s most popular color options: gradient twilight and black carbon fiber. On the back, there is 2.5D glass, a dual rear camera and a very noticeable LED flash.

You will find the standard setup on the bottom of the phone: a 3.5mm headphone jack, USB Type-C connector, microphone and speaker. UMIDIGI One Max comes with a pretty strong portfolio for its price range. It runs on the budget but powerful MTK Helio P23 Octa Core with a 16nm process. There are eight cores altogether: four Cortex-A53 operating at 2.0GHz and four Cortex-A53 operating at 1.5GHz. The graphics are handled by the ARM Mali-G71 MP2 GPU. The phone is equipped with 4GB LPDDRx RAM and sports 128GB of internal memory. You can expand that further with an SD card of up to 256GB.
Overall, the chipset combined with 4GB RAM and a decent amount of onboard storage make for a smooth performance for everyday use and even for playing demanding games — but you might need to adjust the game settings accordingly.
The phone comes with a varied supply of sensors including a fingerprint sensor, the placement of which is quite peculiar. While most phones have their fingerprint sensors on the back panel, built into the home button or even under the display, the UMIDIGI One Max has its fingerprint scanner placed on the side atop the power button. This is definitely an interesting choice and a convenient option for unlocking the phone — but there is a question of how well it will perform over time with such a small surface. There is also the face unlock feature — so you will get options when it comes to keeping the device secure.
Another thing of note about the UMIDIGI One Max is that it comes with an NFC module and is capable of supporting online payments and other NFC related features.

UMIDIGI One Max: triple cameras and wireless charging
There are three cameras in total on the UMIDIGI One Max: a 12.0MP + 5.0MP dual camera on the back and a 16.0MP single selfie shooter on the front. The secondary 5MP sensor on the rear cam is not just for show (as it often is on budget smartphones): it is perfectly capable of centering on the main object and manufacturing a beautiful blur for the background. The selfie cam at the front takes pretty nice portraits and is capable of quality shots and videos even in low light.

On the battery side, you get 4150mAh — which should easily get you through two days of moderate use without the need for a recharge. Speaking of recharging, the phone supports 18W fast charge (getting the device from 0% to 80% in under 80 minutes) and there is also the wireless charging option.
UMIDIGI One Max: the verdict
The UMIDIGI One Max manages to offer quite a lot for the price: modern design with a full screen, wireless fast charging, a real dual camera on the back, a side fingerprint sensor, NFC support and more. This is an impressive setup for under $200 — and there is nothing negative we can say about that. True, certain features (like the aforementioned side fingerprint sensor) may take some getting used to — and we are not quite sure how well that would work out over time. There is budget processor running things — but you do get plenty of storage and decent multitasking.
All in all, the UMIDIGI One Max is impressively feature-rich for the price and, thanks to the full-screen design and the trendy (though limited) selection of colors, make the phone quite high end looking — which is what a lot of us prefer to have even in a budget device.
