Proposed fines from members of the UK government would penalize social networks when they don’t quickly get rid of hate speech. A group of MPs in the country have requested the implementation of “meaningful fines.”
Those fines would go into effect whenever a company doesn’t remove illegal content “within a strict timeframe.”
Google, Facebook, and Twitter have been criticized by the Commons home affairs committee for not dealing with hate, abuse, and extremism adequately. Their efforts have so far been “nowhere near enough.”

Germany is also considering similar legislation that’d fine companies up to €50 million.
