A district court judge in San Francisco has ruled Uber will return money to 47,000 customers due to misleading them about gratuity charges for a year. The users were charged a 20% tip for a year, meanwhile Uber was taking half of the fee, netting the company $860,000 from those affected.
In total, Judge Edward Chen accepted Uber’s settlement of $384,000.
Judge Chen is also presiding over a separate Uber case in which a group of drivers has claimed they should not be considered independent contractors. That case is significantly larger and is expected to settle in the hundreds of millions of dollars.
