Uber Defies Autonomous Vehicle Shutdown Order In San Fr…

Uber began transporting people in autonomous vehicles in San Francisco last week, but the company quickly received an order to halt its activity. Despite that, Uber plans to continue operating autonomous vehicles in the city, arguing it doesn’t need a special permit.

The company is using modified Volvo vehicles with self-driving car technology. UberX passengers have had the opportunity to get a ride in the modified vehicles since Wednesday.

Uber is failing to be a respectful civic partner to the city of San Francisco by choosing to put Uber’s self-interest before the safety of the residents of their hometown…The Mayor is working with the DMV, state officials and the city attorney’s office to explore all possible avenues available to us to enforce state law. – Ellen Canale, Mayor’s Office

Since bringing those cars to the region, Uber has argued it should be allowed to operate without an autonomous vehicle testing permit. This is because a human is always behind the wheel.

California DMV counsel Brian Soublet responded to the company’s activity by demanding Uber get a permit.

Uber faces legal action if this regulatory fight doesn’t go in its favor.
