One state dowload/one state prep problem seems to be fixed!, January 13, 2010
    By
    AnthonyCA

This review is from: TurboTax Home & Business Federal + State + Federal efile 2009 (CD-ROM)

I have always used turbotax but this year but they changed their pricing. The package says one free state download. True, you can download one state of your choice. However, you only get to prepare one state only. All additional state preparations are at $39 via download of even the same state. Thus for example, you have two family members living in California. The first person downloads the free California state download. If the second family member, who also needs to file the California state return, the second family member needs to pay $39 to turbotax via the software, to prepare the second state return, again, even if it is the same state. Contacted turbotax and it took several tries until they stated that this is the case. The first few times they would not confirm it but rather dodge the question and give an ambiguous answer, not admitting to the change.

1/16/10 update: after installing an online software update yesterday, it seems that turbotax has now changed their policy/software back to the way it was in previous years (probably due to the numerous complaints that they have received). Now, as with last year’s edition, you can do more than one state preparation for the same state, for the one free state that you have download. I have now given it 4 stars instead of the previous 1 star, with 4 stars becuase turbotax, as stated above, tried to previously limit the one free download to also mean one state prep (which is not the case now). Other than the previous frustration regarding the state download problem, turbotax has always given me great results. Great advice/info when you tag the help function. The help function will guide you for whatever is currently on the screen, thus you do not have to hunt for the information.

    2/17/10 update
I have still been hearing that some people cannot do more than one state prep for the free included one state download. I have downgraded the star ratings from a 4 previously to a 2 now because the state download/prep problem still exists for some people. If the problem is fixed, I will upgrade the star rating then.

Don’t know if it is real but “Bob Meighan, VP of turbotax” wrote to one of my comments on the deluxe version stating that:

    ****************************
    Bob Meighan says:
Anthony… TurboTax does not charge extra for preparing multiple state returns for the same state. There was no change in our pricing policy this year. I believe if you received a different story from one of our agents, I suspect it was because they probably thought you were referring to TurboTax Online, where you are charged for each return.

    Bob Meighan
    VP, TurboTax
    ****************************

Again I don’t know if Bob is for real. If so, I would kindly ask Bob if he could change the turbotax website to state officially, for once and for all, that a buyer of the desktop version shall have unlimited state preps for the same free included state download.

I have also heard from another buyer that turbotax said this was due to a software flaw and should be fixed by Feb 25. We shall see. In the meantime, even though I can do multiple returns on the same state, many others cannot, thus buyer beware.

    2/28/10 update:
The problem seems to be fixed. I am upgrading the ratings from 2 stars to 4 now, after it seems to be finally working now. I have received a comment stating that now it is possible to prepare more than one same state return from the free one included state download. Please let us know if it IS or IS NOT working for you.

Download from Amazon – – – the TurboTax bugs are Gone, December 31, 2009
    By
    Howard (Jacksonville, FL) –

    Amazon Verified Purchase(What’s this?)

I just downloaded TurboTax Home & Business (for tax year 2009) from Amazon. Despite the initial negative reviews talking about TurboTax’s bugginess, I needed to purchase the product today (12/31) so that I could take the expense deduction on my 2009 tax return. I’ve followed the prices for a while and seen them decline. The $73.62 price that I paid to download probably won’t be the lowest, but if last year’s price history chart is any indication, the price will bottom somewhere around $65 in mid-January before jumping back up into the mid $90’s around February 1st when everyone gets their W-2 forms and are ready to actually do their taxes.

The download from Amazon was fast and flawless, and I do mean fast. I have Comcast internet and all 85 MB was downloaded to my computer in slightly less than a minute. I know that the Amazon website says 105 MB, but the Amazon downloader only stated 85 MB.

Installation also occured flawlessly on my computer running XP. Upon executing, the software downloaded the latest updates from Intuit flawlessly. Once the program was up and running, I imported 2008’s return, added my password, and saved. I won’t do anything else until I receive my W-2’s in late January. By then I expect Intuit to probably have another update to improve/fix anything else.

I’ve been using TurboTax for my Home & Business since 2004 and have never been dissapointed with the software. The only thing that I was dissapointed with was the price that I was charged as a returning Intuit TurboTax customer. I believe that Intuit charges about $106 including shipping. Needless to say, I’m quite happy paying $73 and getting the same software.

Major upgrade for Office, February 25, 2007
    By
    pm444 “pm444” (Okemos, MI USA) –

This review is from: Microsoft Office Home and Student 2007 [Old Version] (CD-ROM)

While Office 2003 offered a refreshed look and some improvements in functionality, the basic structure remained the same. While veteran users were able to easily navigate the familiar menus, it had become increasingly difficult to locate some features (for instance, in Word, would you find “insert new rows” to a table in the “insert” or “table” menu?).

With Office 2007, Microsoft offers the “ribbon”, a new and more intuitive way to access features that we used to find in the menus. While the features are basically the same, they are now grouped together according to when and how you would normally use them. These groupings are accessed by clicking on tabs, which are organized in the order you’d use them. The best way to get a better understanding of this change is to check out the screenshots, or download a free trial version of Office from Microsoft. While Office 2007 was released at the same time as Vista, you do not need Vista in order to run it. The program ran fine on my Windows XP laptop, which only had 512 MB of RAM, and it runs even better on my Vista laptop with 2 GB of RAM.

As for which version of Office to buy, this is the third time I’ve opted for the Home and Student version (which has had other names in previous releases, but is still being sold for $149). I need Word, Excel, and PowerPoint, and this is the most cost-effective way to get those programs. I was disappointed that Microsoft dropped Outlook from the Home and Student version. In order to continue to use Outlook, I installed Outlook 2003 and haven’t had any problems.

Instead of Outlook, you get OneNote, a program that uses notebooks and tabs to save and organize all sorts of files and documents. I haven’t had much time to play with OneNote yet, but the more I use it, the more impressed I am with it. It looks like one of those programs that you can personalize to meet your own needs and not have to fight with it to get it to do what you want.

This is a significant upgrade and should allow all users, new and experienced, to work more efficiently and quickly.
