Comment on TurboTax Deluxe Federal + e-File 2010 [Download] Reviews by brownil “brownil”.
Still the best,
TurboTax is the oldest, and IMO, still the best. Make sure you get the version that you need: this one is Federal only, plus a paid-in-advance efile (eFile $9.95 cost is charged by the IRS unless you buy it as part of a tax software package). You can purchase a State component separately, but if you require a State submission it’s a better deal if you buy the “Federal+State” as a package.
BTW, I also tried the “H&R Block TaxAct” software side by side. It is cheaper by $10 and it works pretty well (not quite as intuitive as TurboTx, I think). However, although they advertise that it “imports info from TurboTax”, I found that not to be the case. It does import simple info like names, addresses etc, but in my case it did not import the complicated tax-related stuff like depreciation schedules, home-office specifications, etc etc. Unless you have a fairly simple return (no home office, small business, business use of a car, etc), switching may not be a good idea unless you are willing to re-invent the wheel for some complex issues.
I also think that downloading is a better idea than buying a cd at some B&M. This way, you are getting the latest version; when you install from a cd, you will spend from 5 to 15 minutes downloading “updates” for the older version on the cd.
I’d give this software 5 stars, but the idea of income tax makes me nauseous so minus 1 star :-)
PS: this version is NOT $9.95 from Intuit – it is $49.95 plus Shipping and Handling.
