To appease regulators, AT&T could have to drop some of its major assets if it wants to move forward with its acquisition of Time Warner. Sources claim the Department of Justice (DOJ) isn’t immediately giving its approval. It wants Time Warner to sell Turner Broadcasting or AT&T to sell DirecTV.
Details of AT&T’s negotiations with the DOJ haven’t been officially shared, though CFO John Stephens has confirmed the company is speaking with the authorities. Stephens says it’s now “uncertain” when the deal will close due to these discussions.
According to the Financial Times, the companies view these demands as “unreasonable.” If the DOJ pushes the demands, AT&T could take the matter to court.
