The Taiwan government has set up a target prevailing download speed of 1Gbps for fixed-line broadband Internet-access services for 2020 and 2Gbps for 2025, according to industry sources.
Currently fixed-line 100Mbps broadband access to the Internet has covered 97% of Taiwan’s population and the 1Gbps broadband network can serve 35% of the population, the sources said.
Chunghwa Telecom (CHT), the largest provider of fixed-line broadband services, has offered prevailing download speeds of 100Mbps, 300Mbps, 500Mbps and 1Gbps, with 1Gbps services priced at NT$3,599 (US$114) a month. MSOs (multi-system operators of cable TV) have offered cable modem-based broadband Internet-access services at prevailing download speeds of 100Mbps and 300Mbps, the sources noted.
In order to reach a download speed of over 1Gbps, service operators have to use fiber-optic networks and MSOs have to adopt DOCSIS 3.1 and above technology specifications, the sources indicated. For fixed-line broadband operators, however, deployment of fiber-optic networks has been facing difficulties arising from old architecture of existing buildings, the sources explained. MSOs currently use DOCSIS 3.0 technology and are unlikely to adopt DOCSIS 3.1 for the time being due to much higher cost.
