Take a bunch of developers and tell them to build something that nobody needs in one day and see what happens. That’s the idea behind the Stupid Shit No One Needs & Terrible Ideas Hackathon, which has been up and running for a few years.
Last week developers came up with 75 dumb things as part of the latest hackathon, and some are so stupid that they’re actually pretty brilliant. And some, like the Outcognito Mode Chrome extension, are things you can actually install and use (but you probably shouldn’t).
For example, here are a few of this year’s projects projects:
- VR Doorbell: when someone rings a connected doorbell, the video stream is directed to a VR headset so you don’t miss visitors when you’re gaming.
- Eyeball Pong: Play a game of pong by moving the paddle with eye movements.
- Hypochondriapp: Save time when looking up a diagnosis online by immediately finding the worst possible thing your symptoms describe.
- Outcognito Mode: Automatically tweet every website you visit and everything you type in a Chrome web browser
- NonAd Block: It’s Chrome extension that’s a reverse ad blocker that removes all web content that isn’t advertising.
- Soylent for Women: It’s just like the trendy meal replacement… but pink… and twice as expensive.
- Zen Volt: Learn to relax by receiving a shock when you’re not meditating.
- 3Cheese printer: It’s a 3D printer. That uses cheese in a can.
- Shakie: A smartphone camera app that only takes photos when your phone is shaking.
- Robot Porn Addict: A semi-NSFW system that uses machine learning to try to describe what it sees in porn scenes. Apparently those movies involve a lot of people brushing their teeth.
