Strava, one of the most popular fitness tracking apps, has been available to iOS users for quite some time now. However, the application did not feature Apple Watch support until recently.
Starting this week, those who already have Strava installed on their iPhones can update to the latest version to get its functionality on the Apple Watch as well. Those who don’t have the application can download Strava for free via App Store.
Keep in mind though that the new version of Strava supports Apple Watch Series 2 only. Apple Watch users will be getting GPS support and the option to record Strava activities using their smartwatch without having to carry their smartphones with them.
In order to record Strava activities on the Apple Watch, a premium account is not required. However, for $5.99 per month or $59.99 per year, certain features will be unlocked, including Beacon and Live Segments. These premium features can be acquired through in-app purchasing whenever you want.
“Research and athlete feedback often drives new Strava features and integrations. We’re excited to add to our growing list of compatible devices, and see this as the first step in providing our athletes an excellent Strava experience on the Apple Watch Series 2.
Our athletes can look forward to continued updates as we strive to provide the best Watch experience possible,” said Mateo Ortega, Strava’s Head of Integration.
It’s also worth mentioning that recording activities with iPod Touch and iPad version 1 will produce inaccurate location results, which means additional hardware will be required to collect information from ANT+ sensors.
On a side note, Strava announced that its fitness tracking application will be available to Android Wear 2.0 users as well. The app is supposed to offer the same functionality as the iOS version, but for Android devices.
