An upgraded card reader has been introduced by Shopify, helping the company compete against Square’s product. It’s now shipping to users in the United States and it’ll work with both swipe and chip-based dips. Shopify designed the product entirely in-house.
Square’s Reader is a more dominant card reader in the industry right now, but Shopify is looking to take over some of the market.
The “Chip & Swipe Reader” accepts MasterCard, Visa, American Express, and Discover. It’ll get 400 chip transactions or 700 swipes per charge.
New point-of-sale merchants can receive it for free. Existing customers will need to spend $29.
