Sharp Confirms That Next-Gen iPhone Will Use OLED

The widespread rumour that Apple will use OLED panels in next-generation iPhones has finally been confirmed. The newly appointed CEO of Japanese display maker Sharp, Tai Jeng-wu, has confirmed that Apple plans to ditch LTPS panels and use OLED displays.

The new OLED panels should offer improved contrast compared to the current LTPS display, and they also offer more flexibility, meaning Apple could produce iPhones with curved screens.

“The iPhone has been evolving and now it is switching from LTPS (low-temperature poly-silicon) to OLED panels.

We don’t know whether Apple’s OLED iPhones will be a hit, but if Apple doesn’t walk down this path and transform itself, there will be no innovation. It is a crisis but it is also an opportunity,” Tai said.
