German tech giant SAP said that it will be expanding the enterprise offerings available on its HANA Cloud Platform for Internet of Things (IoT). Making the announcement at the IoT World 2016 conference being held in Santa Clara, Calif., this week, SAP said the new offerings will be focused on helping enterprises provide new customer outcomes.
“SAP is helping customers map their journeys through digital transformation, and the IoT has the potential to drive the largest segment of growth in new business value,” Tanja Rueckert, executive vice president, LoB Digital Assets and IoT, SAP, said in a statement.
Extending the Cloud Platform
SAP’s HANA Cloud Platform for IoT is a set of capabilities that will extend the company’s HANA platform (pictured above) and HANA Vora software with new features to specifically address the needs of IoT applications. The company said the data currently available from connected devices offers an enormous opportunity for businesses, but it also represents a considerable challenge for enterprise platforms facing new IT infrastructure demands.
“Customers can use these offerings from SAP and supported partner solutions to build and expand upon their existing investments in SAP HANA to cover their growing IoT-driven demands in the area of edge computing, connectivity management, device management, mobile enablement, dashboarding, analytics and predictive computing,” the company said in the statement.
SAP is already supporting OpenStack as the cloud infrastructure and Cloud Foundry as the open source framework for the HANA Cloud Platform. Among the new features included in the IoT offerings are the IoT foundation bundle and intelligent edge processing bundle.
The foundation bundle will provide a set of capabilities for IoT data management, according to SAP. The intelligent edge processing bundle, meanwhile, will offer a set of technologies that run at the edge of the network to complement the foundation bundle, including a “streaming lite” component, the edge database and sync client, and SAP Plant Connectivity software, the company said.
New Collaborations
SAP also announced a new collaboration with Dell on products designed to help address the IoT industry’s biggest operational challenges, including business continuity, overall equipment effectiveness, maintenance costs and return on assets. Under the deal, SAP’s IoT software will run on Dell’s Edge Gateway 5000 hardware.
The company said it is also collaborating with Hitachi on a global level to create industry-specific IoT solutions for a range of applications, with a particular focus on the smart manufacturing, smart city, transportation, and logistics industries.
Matthias Beier, CIO, EDF Renewable Energy, said the new tools would help the energy company with its data analysis needs. “We have a constant need to perform machine data analysis along with geolocation mapping and transactional data from SAP,” Beier said in SAP’s statement. “The powerful analytics capabilities of SAP HANA with operational data in the OSIsoft PI System make meeting these business needs possible by delivering an inventive IoT platform enabling better analytics and decision-making capabilities across our organization.”
