Samsung’s New Tablets and Notebooks Launched at CES

Among the new devices unveiled by Samsung Electronics at CES 2016 in Las Vegas last week are the Galaxy TabPro S 2-in-1 tablet and an “ultra-portable” Notebook 9 that weighed in at just 1.85 pounds. The new Notebook 9, which also comes in a 15-inch model, sports a security camera that can send photos to a pre-registered e-mail address if the device is stolen.

Of the more than 3,600 exhibitors that displayed their products at this year’s CES, many tech companies used the show to launch their latest laptops and convertibles, especially for the mobile professional market. Super-lightweight devices and MacBook spinoffs were especially popular.

Other products Samsung launched at CES include the Gear S2 Classic smart watch in new platinum and rose-gold finishes. The company also announced it would be bringing Gear S2 compatibility to iOS later in the year.

“We’re building a portfolio of devices that work seamlessly together and connected services that are useful, convenient and secure,” Alanna Cotton, vice president of mobile computing marketing for Samsung, said during her presentation at the event. “And this is just the beginning of what’s to come this year from Samsung.”

‘Lightest 2-in-1 on the Market’

Cotton said the new Galaxy TabPro S (pictured) is the “thinnest and lightest two-in-one tablet on the market today.” Featuring Microsoft’s Windows 10 operating system, the Galaxy TabPro S also offers a full-size keyboard cover and touchpad. The combination of features was “designed for powerful business performance,” Cotton said.

Just 6.3 millimeters (about .25 inches) thick, the Galaxy TabPro S weighs just 693 grams (about 1.5 pounds) and has a flexible hinge for dual-angle viewing. It’s also the first device on the market with a Super AMOLED display for Windows, according to Samsung.

The device offers fast charging in two-and-a-half hours, with up to 10.5 hours of battery life. With a price yet to be announced, the TabPro S is expected to become available in February.

Enhanced Notebook 9 Security Features

Also debuting last week were two new additions to Samsung’s Notebook 9 series — ultra-light laptops featuring either 13.3-inch or 15-inch screens. Each offers a full-HD display with a low-reflective screen. The devices are set to hit the market sometime early this year, according to the company.

The Notebook 9 devices also come with a security feature called Security CAM, which lets users take and send photos remotely if their devices are stolen. In addition, each machine offers Pattern Log-in, Secret Screen and Record Block features to help keep private documents and information safe from unauthorized access.

Two other features — Samsung Link 2.0 and SideSync 4.0 — help support improved productivity by letting users more easily and seamlessly share content, Samsung said. And the 15-inch Notebook 9, which has a battery life of up to 12 hours, comes with a quick-charging feature that enables a full charge in 90 minutes. No pricing information has yet been announced.
