Samsung might show off its first prototype foldable smartphone at IFA 2017 in Berlin this year.

According to a report from ETNews Korea, Samsung Electronics and Samsung Display are currently busy working on a foldable smartphone that is expected to enter pilot production in the third quarter of the year. To verify the quality of its foldable smartphones, Samsung will apparently be producing thousands of prototypes. Samsung will then decide on mass producing the foldable smartphones, after gauging the quality and performance of the foldable smartphones, as well as the “amount of demands from markets”.

The Samsung foldable smartphone will reportedly be “luxurious” in terms of design, which is to be expected as it will be positioned as an “ultra-premium smartphone” by the company at launch. It will be sitting right at the top of the Galaxy lineup, above the company’s flagship Galaxy S-series and Galaxy Note-series smartphones.

Apart from Samsung, the report claims Chinese manufacturers such as Lenovo, Oppo, and Vivo too are actively working on getting their first foldable smartphones out this year. Chinese companies too are looking to start production of foldable smartphones around Q3, so it isn’t clear if Samsung will be able to claim the “world’s first foldable smartphone” title.
