What do Acer, Google, HTC, Oculus, Samsung, and Sony have in common? Well, they all make consumer devices (such as smartphones) and are deeply invested in realising virtual reality’s potential. As you probably know, some of these brands have came up with lucrative virtual reality platforms such as the Vive (HTC), the Gear VR (Samsung), and the Daydream standard for smartphone-based VR experiences (Google).
All of this considered, it’s not surprising that the six companies have forged an alliance to promote and develop virtual reality as a technological niche. Titled Global Virtual Reality Association (GVRA), the non-profit organization will research and share best practices for the industry, bring together stakeholders, and promote the global adoption of VR. The group aims to benefit consumers, policy makers, and industries interested in the technology.
According to GVRA’s manifesto, “VR has the potential to be the next great computing platform, improving sectors ranging from education to healthcare, and contribute significantly to the global economy.” Hopefully, these companies joining forces will bring more rapid development to the promising and already available, but “not quite there yet” technology.
