A few weeks back, a report published by The Korea Herald claimed that Samsung’s next flagship smartphone, the Galaxy S8, will be the company’s first with a 4K resolution display. A new report by SlashGear is now claiming the same thing.
Of course, the bump in resolution isn’t going to result in a significant improvement in terms of image quality, but will instead make the Galaxy S8 a great device for virtual reality. The current crop of flagship Galaxy smartphones, which offer 1440 x 2560 resolution aren’t too great for enjoying VR as the pixel density isn’t quite high enough for a crystal clear VR experience. The Galaxy S8 on the other hand is rumored to sport a 5.5-inch display with 4K resolution, which should give it a pixel density of 801 pixels per inch, significantly higher than the 577 PPI density of the current Galaxy S7.
While the Galaxy S8 is going to be quite a beast in the display department, it could still disappoint some buyers as Samsung is reportedly looking at joining the likes of Apple, Motorola, and LeEco in getting the 3.5mm headphone jack axed from its next flagship. It appears more manufacturers could start doing away with the outdated analog connector, which could prove to be a nuisance for some consumers. However, on the flip side, using digital connectors such as USB Type-C or Lightning does deliver better audio quality and allows manufacturers to create slimmer devices. Sure, most flagship smartphones are already as slim as they need to be, but the improvement in audio quality will certainly be appreciated by everyone.
The 3.5mm headphone jack won’t be the only thing to be eliminated next year, Samsung is also rumored to do away with the flat screen version. Similar to the Galaxy Note 7, the Galaxy S8 could only be launched with a dual-curved edge 4K resolution display.
As for specs, the only info currently available is that the Galaxy S8 will be powered by the Exynos 8895 SoC with the powerful ARM Mali-G71 GPU handling the graphics.
