Samsung is bolstering its smartphone lineup in the Chinese market with two new devices, the Galaxy On5 (2016) and Galaxy On7 (2016). Rumors and leaks have been pointing at the existence of these phones for quite some time, and the Korean giant has finally made them official. Samsung launched the Galaxy On series of budget smartphones in India last year and the On5 (2016) and On7 (2016) bring considerable upgrades in terms of features.
Well, at least the Galaxy On7 (2016) is confirmed to be a notable upgrade, as Samsung hasn’t fully revealed the Galaxy On5 (2016)’s specs. The On7 (2017) has a 5.5-inch Full HD display (an LCD unit instead of a Super AMOLED panel) on the front, and is powered by a octa-core Snapdragon 625 processor along with 3GB of RAM. On the back of the device lies a 13-megapixel camera with f/1.9 aperture; the selfie camera up front is an 8-megapixel sensor. The On7 (2016) also has 32GB of expandable internal storage, NFC, 4G LTE connectivity, a 3,300 mAh battery, and Android 6.0 Marshmallow. The On5 (2016)’s listed specs include a 5-inch HD display, Snapdragon 617 processor, and Android 6.0. Both devices have a fingerprint sensor on the home button and what look like metallic bodies.
The Galaxy On5 (2016) and Galaxy On7 (2016) are available for purchase in Black, Gold, and Rose Gold color options, with the On7 (2016) priced at 1,599 yuan (roughly SGD 325). It’s unclear right now if these devices will be launched in other markets; the original On series was very limited in terms of availability, and it is likely the 2016 iterations will also be limited to a couple of markets. In addition to the On devices, Samsung is also working on a upper mid-range handset dubbed the Galaxy C9 for China. At 6 inches, the Galaxy C9 will be larger than the On7 (2016) and will also command a higher price tag, although there is no word on when the Galaxy C9 will go official.
