Samsung Electronics has secured new chair and vice-chair positions within the third Generation Partnership Project (3GPP), the world’s largest telecommunications requirements group.
Established in 1998, 3GPP develops international cellular communications requirements with participation from main firms and organizations together with Samsung, Qualcomm, Apple, Ericsson, Nokia and Huawei. The worldwide physique consists of three Technical Specification Groups (TSGs) — Service and System Aspects (SA), Radio Access Network (RAN) and Core Network and Terminals (CT) — every overseeing 4 to 6 Working Groups (WGs) for a complete of 15 WGs throughout the group.
Rajavelsamy Rajadurai, Principal Architect at Samsung R&D Institute India-Bangalore (SRI–B), has been elected chair of 3GPP’s Service and System Aspects Working Group 3 (SA WG3). Meanwhile, Lixiang Xu, Principal Engineer at Samsung R&D Institute China-Beijing (SRC-B), has been elected vice chair of 3GPP’s Radio Access Network Working Group 3 (RAN WG3). SA WG3 defines requirements associated to community safety and person privateness, whereas RAN WGThree develops base station interface protocol applied sciences.
In March, Dr. Younsun Kim, Master at Samsung Research, was elected chair of 3GPP’s Technical Specification Group Radio Access Network (TSG RAN) — main standardization throughout all areas of wi-fi expertise together with the bodily layer, protocol points and radio useful resource management.
With these newest appointments, Samsung now holds three chair positions (SA WG2, SA WG3 and TSG RAN) and 5 vice-chair positions (SA WG4, SA WG6, RAN WG2, RAN WG3 and CT WG3) inside 3GPP.
Beginning within the second half of 2025, 3GPP will provoke analysis into 6G applied sciences. SA WG3 plans to discover safety enhancements to counter cyberattacks, together with these from quantum computer systems, and to develop privateness safety applied sciences for cellular communications networks. RAN WG3 is anticipated to analysis AI-powered options to cut back power consumption at base stations and enhance service high quality. These teams are positioned to play an important position in advancing using AI, strengthening safety and selling sustainability — all key focus areas within the improvement of 6G.
Through its expanded management inside 3GPP, Samsung has established a framework to assist drive requirements throughout the cellular business and collaborate with companions to form the way forward for next-generation communications.
