In a press release Microsoft has announced that the Saarland Police Service in Germany is running a trial of HP’s Elite X3 windows 10 mobile handsets and Surface tablets to help record minor accidents in their database. Around 33,000 such incidents need to be recorded every year, and currently involves handwritten notes, sketches and photographs which then needs to be transcribed electronically, doubling the work and the odds of errors creeping in.
Since September 1/3 of crashes are being recorded digitally at the Saarlouis police station, leaving police with more time to do other essential police work.
“The use of mobile devices in the accident statistics not only facilitates data collection on site, but also allows for a greater integration of the entire management process,” said Professor Dr. Peter Loos from the Institute of Economics computer science at the German Research Center for Artificial Intelligence and The University of Saarland.
The first interim results show police and the public are equally enthusiastic about the project, with the electronic recording cutting the period of congestion following a traffic incident by half.
“With the digitization of the police service Saarland is breaking new ground,” says Jürgen Lennartz , Head of the State and CIO of Saarland.
The project will run until the end of the year, and we hope will then see a more wider roll-out.
The news follows reports of the long-running success of the Windows Phone deployment by the NYPD in New York, USA, who have enthusiastically embraced their Windows Phones and experienced significant improvements in their responsiveness and productivity.
