Reports: Fitbit wants to acquire Pebble

252

Fitbit is one of the biggest players in the wearable gadget space thanks to the company’s popular line of activity trackers. But as fitness tracking features are increasingly being built into other devices including smartwatches, smartphones, and even some smart headphones, it looks like Fitbit may be looking to expand.

According to reports from The Information and The Financial Times, Fitbit is in talks to acquire smartwatch pioneer Pebble.

The reports suggest Fitbit is primarily interested in Pebble’s intellectual property including its smartwatch operating system, rather than the company’s current line of products. If the deal goes through, it’s possible that the Pebble name could be phased out, although some Pebble-like ideas could show up in next-gen Fitbit devices.
Maybe we could see Fitbit gadgets with sunlight viewable electronic paper displays? Maybe Fitbit will adopt the smartstrap system for wearable devices that can learn new tricks thanks to a modular wrist strap that lets you attach additional hardware components?

Or maybe the consolidation of two big names in the wearable market just means there’ll be a little less competition in this space.
