Report: Surface Pro 5 to employ a new processor but overall …

The Microsoft Surface Pro 4 was released in October 2015. That means it has been a year and a half since it hit the market. Unlike smartphones, many of which are refreshed and updated every 12-months or a bit sooner, the tablet market does not require a new model to be made available so often. But we should be getting close to the unveiling and release of the Surface Pro 5. For example, Microsoft waited 17 months between the release of the Surface Pro 3 and Surface Pro 4.

According to a new report, there will not be that many changes between the current Surface Pro slab and the next one. Windows expert Paul Thurrott says that he has been told by a source that the Surface Pro 5 will be powered by the Intel Kaby Lake processor. That, notes Thurrott, is the big change coming to the Surface Pro 5. The chip is made using a 14nm process. Using the new processor should make the Surface Pro 5 speedier than its predecessor, and should also add improved battery life to the new slate.

The Surface Pro 5 will continue to employ the proprietary Surface Connect power connector, according to Thurrott. That means that you shouldn’t expect to see Microsoft put a Type-C USB port on the device.
