QuirkLogic is showing off the first devices expected to ship with E Ink’s new 42 inch electronic paper display. It’s called the Quilla and QuirkLogic describes it as a Connected eWriter.

Basically it’s a collaborative digital whiteboard for use in business settings.

You can use a pen to write notes or draw diagrams on the large, 2880 x 2160 pixel display, and the device has software that lets you move or erase text, save notes as a PDF files, or connect multiple Quilla eWriters so that your presentation spans across more than one screen.

QuirkLogic has been testing the Quilla with potential customers, and plans to bring it to market in mid-2017.

The Quilla has a battery that the company says is good for 16 hours of continuous use. So you can either keep the device plugged into the wall in a conference room or unplug it and move it to the space where you’re having a meeting. It weighs about 22 pounds.

There’s a USB port that you can use to transfer PDF files to the eWriter or to export files created on the Quilla.

Since it has an E Ink display, the grayscale screen should be visible from any angle using nothing but ambient light. And anything you put on the screen will stay there indefinitely, even if the battery dies.

This is the first product from QuirkLogic, but the company is working on an ecosystem that could include smaller devices that participants in a meeting can use to view or share files with the larger Quilla.

Pricing hasn’t been announced yet, but the device is positioned as an enterprise solution that will compete with products like Microsoft’s Surface Hub… so it’s safe to expect a price tag that’s measured in thousands of dollars rather than hundreds.
